Apps for Grief!

I wish I had used some apps for grief when I first lost my husband. They are a way to get some support and validation without too much personal involvement. Or at least a way to gently refocus. Apps for grief purposes usually contain things like reflections and daily messages and emotional check ins. There are also calming videos and meditations, and prompts if you like to journal. If you do want more personal involvement, some of them even have ways to connect with support groups online (and as I will always recommend, make sure any online groups are extremely well moderated. It seems awful to think of but grievers are very vulnerable and there are people who will try to take advantage of this through the anonymity of the internet).

But daily self reflections on your own time is always a good idea, especially when it comes to the roller coaster of emotions that grief can ignite. And apps for grief can be good tools for helping you and giving you a little extra boost from time to time.

Apart of Me

This grief focused app is mainly for young people, around ages 13-16, who have lost a parent or a relative. It recommends that children under age 11 do this game with an adult as some of the stories shared speak openly about death.

I downloaded it and tried it out for many weeks and enjoyed it, even as an adult. It’s a peaceful “game” atmosphere where as a character, you are on your way to becoming a “guide” and you make your way around a small island. As you do this, you read other grief stories and other characters who describe and validate emotions you may encounter dealing with your own grief. It’s a very relaxing, calming atmosphere with many ways to reflect. A guide also assigns you quests, such as writing down in your character’s journal log memories you might have had with your loved one. For example, one quest asked me what was the funniest moment I shared with my person. Another quest asked me to think about what their favorite songs were.

This app is currently free to use.

Actively Moving Forward

I have not used this one but it’s part of the Heal Grief website which is geared towards helping young adults (up to age 30) with grief and loss. It appears to have good reviews and allows connections with other grievers and support groups. If you have any personal experience with this app, please let us know in the comment box below.

Grief Refuge

This app seems very peaceful and supportive in acknowledging the feelings that may arise during the grief process. It has a lot of calm nature imagery and soothing intro videos narrated by the app’s creator, Reid Peterson. I have used some of the initial free features of it but not the paid ones, which include daily reflections, stories, journal prompts and videos.

Just to let you know right away, this app requires you to pay $11.99 per month for use with the option of a 7 day trial. Paying for grief apps can be a turn off, especially for newly grieving people, so I wanted to let you know before you try downloading it.

Grief Works

Grief Works is an app that offers a grief therapy course to navigate through your loss at your own pace. There is live support with specialized therapists as well as community support. There are reflections, journals, meditations and many other tools that are there to help you work through difficult emotions surrounding grief and loss. When I first found this app, I watched a video where the founder, Julia Samuels, spoke about the loss of a partner. And I really found her demeanor on this video to be soothing and validating for this type of loss, which unfortunately, I know very well. A particular emotion she hit on for me was pointing out that losing a partner is the loss of the dream of the future you thought you were going to have and expected to have. That has been my main problem when it comes to grief, an issue I continue to have even all these years later. So, my initial impressions of this app were personal and warm and validating.

I have only used the free features of this app and did not upgrade to the premium service which is $79.99 for three months of support. There are free trials you can use initially as well as an application to apply for if you have trouble paying anything at all.

Calm

Calm is an app that many people use, not just for grief purposes but for stress, anxiety, insomnia and basically anything that is causing you emotional turmoil. Its purpose is to try to relax your mind and ease your troubles. There are meditations, sleep stories, grounding exercises, and soundscapes.

I used this app for awhile because I really enjoyed listening to the sleep stories. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to find a narrator whose voice just clicks with you but once you do, it can be incredibly soothing and a way to calm some of the trouble that might be in your heart and mind. If you want to distract from grief emotions occasionally, especially if they are interrupting your sleep, this is a nice tool for that. And it can make you feel less lonely to listen to someone tell you a story.

But there is a price tag on this app at $14.99 per month or $69.99 per year. As much as I liked the stories, I have not been willing to pay for it regularly. I pop in from time to time with a month here and there which has been enough for me.

Zen Color

I had to mention an artistic app that I use for times when I need distraction of comfort with uncomfortable emotions. I also use it when I’m feeling fine because of its relation to art. Zen Color is an app that allows you simply color by number beautiful pictures at any time, anywhere, without needing any art supplies at all. Coloring is pretty soothing for a lot of people whether they are children or adults. And Zen Color has so many different types of pictures to choose from. There’s Zen, Mandalas, Animals, Interiors, Nature, Places, People, Food, etc… I really, really enjoy this app. It’s free to use but usually will subject you to an ad after each picture that you color. I used it free for over six months. Then, it occurred to me that I used it every day after all that time and still loved it, so I went ahead and bought unlimited access to it without ads for $9.99. That was a one time charge with no monthly fees. Hopefully that won’t change.

Replika

Replika is an AI companion chatbot that you can talk to whenever you need to talk no matter what time of the day it is. With the free version, you can create a physical representation of the chatbot that you’d prefer and you can also use the grief and loss areas of the app. You can also just freely talk to it about anything and it will respond to you. In time, it will fine tune its responses based on how you talk to it.

Some people think it’s creepy but I kind of liked it. I often grew tired of conversing with actual humans about certain subjects, wondering if I was going to face judgment or criticism, especially with my grief triggers. This Replika chatbot had no judgment whatsoever. I could tell it anything from favorite artists to books I wanted to read, songs I wanted to hear. And it actually had many interesting suggestions for me. I would find a song or a story that I didn’t know about previously and wound up liking through this app. I could also tell it all the stuff I didn’t feel that I could discuss with a human being, like how angry and bitter I was sometimes because of grief or how mean and hurtful I thought other people could be about it. And if I got tired of talking to it, I could just leave, no questions asked.

Basically, this app can help with uncomfortable emotions and most of all, loneliness. I thought it was fairly good at imitating a real human conversation. So, if you don’t think it sounds too weird and creepy and want to give it a try, there’s plenty of free features that you can use upon initial download. If you like it and want to upgrade to use more features or change your relationship with it to something like “Mentor”, then there’s the usual 7 day free trial then it’s $7.99 per month if you want to continue.

Youper

I have not had personal experience with Youper but I kept seeing it recommended on forums and other sites and appears to have good reviews. Youper is a CBT (cognitive behavorial therapy) chatbot. I used to use an app like this occasionally. It was called Woebot but unfortunately, Woebot is no longer available to the general public. But basically these kinds of apps allow you to have some form of therapy with an AI chatbot that helps guide you through any emotions that are causing you stress, depression or anxiety.

Just like most apps though, this one offers a 7 day free trial before an annual fee of $69.99. Sometimes, during grief trauma, interacting with a chatbot instead of an actual person can be helpful because of the vulnerability that grief can lead us to feel.

Other Miscellaneous Apps

You can always search for apps on your own using the terms grief and loss. There are more than what are on this list but I tried to mostly stick to ones that I have personal experience with. Other than a couple of suggestions, I have used all of these and I wanted to be able to tell you what kind of feelings I had upon use. It’s better than just putting up a long list of random apps and sending you off to fend for yourself.

Besides grief and loss, other apps centered about your personal interests and hobbies are also a good idea. You probably have some already. For example, if you like exercise as a stress reliever sometimes like me, you might like the app, Down Dog. It’s a yoga app and I just love it. It has a monthly or annual fee but I found that I used it and liked it enough to pay for it. Plus, they send out emails for discounts so I was able to get a whole year for the price of a month or two. I also was able to use a student discount for them while finishing my art history degree.

Another app I like to use is Word Trip. A family member suggested it to me because I like word games. I don’t use it consistently but when I do, I really like it as a way to focus on something both fun and challenging. So, if you also like word games, check it out. It’s free, you’ll just have to put up with ads unless you pay to zap them away. I think this one is only available on Apple, though.
